The town takes its name after George Bass, who was an explorer who discovered the area and also named Western Port Bay back in 1797. He was also responsible for discovering that the eastern creek, now known as Bass River, could provide fresh water.

Another contribution was naming Phillip Island’s eastern Cape Woolamai. A tribute to him can be found at George Bass Park, where visitors can go to learn more about his significant achievements.

Bass as we know it began experiencing prosperity little by little in the years that followed. In 1835, Port Phillip was established as a permanent settlement by Batman and Fawkner from Tasmania. In the years after that, more industries began to sprout up. The first settlement is now known as Corinella.

The Bass River Red Deer Farm is a popular destination. Come to meet friendly deer, and shop for leather goods, excellent venison cuts, German Black Forest cuckoo clocks, emu oil, and many other interesting items on display.
