Summerlands

Summerlands is a historic residential subdivision in the Bass Coast Shire of Phillip Island.

It was one of the last remaining areas discovered by European settlers in the early 20th century and is highly sought after for its abundant penguin population.

As home to the Penguin Parade, a famous wildlife encounter in Australia, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to see these adorable animals. People first began discovering the penguin colony in the 1920s. Still, today, a serious effort is being made to protect the penguins and flora and fauna in their natural habitat. The best time to visit is during the early evenings, as the penguins that live in Summerland Beach waddle home from the water. There are several viewing decks where visitors can glimpse the penguins from afar.

Summerlands is also a surfing hotspot. Many even credit this area for birthing the rise of surfing on Phillip Island as far back as the 1920s. Dozens of surf schools dot the beaches, so if you’ve never surfed before, your visit here is the perfect opportunity to do so. Consistent waves make it a top destination for seasoned surfers throughout the year.

Early afternoons and mornings are great times to visit the expansive beaches of Summerlands. Families can enjoy fun swimming, having a picnic, and building sandcastles. Check out Point Grant, better known by its nickname, The Nobbies, a popular attraction located west of Phillip Island. The area is made up of dramatic cobblestone rocks that stick out of the water resembling knobs during certain times of the day. A few islands at the end of The Nobbies are home to one of Australia’s biggest fur seal populations.

Summerlands is a terrific addition to your itinerary as you visit Phillip Island. There are many thrilling attractions to tick off for a truly unforgettable holiday.
